Watchtower

A real-time inventory monitoring service using a distributed pool of polling agents to track retailer stock across multiple sources and alert subscribers within seconds of a restock.

Full stack: Fastify · React · Tailwind

Overview

Watchtower monitors retailer inventory for products that sell out in minutes and notifies subscribers the moment stock appears. Its value is measured entirely in latency, because an alert arriving even ninety seconds after a restock is worth nothing to anyone.

Work is spread across a distributed pool of independent polling agents, so rate limits, timeouts, and upstream outages stay isolated to the source that caused them instead of degrading every other watch the service happens to be running at that moment.

Retailers rate-limit hard, serve stale cached pages, and briefly show phantom stock, so an observation is separated from a confirmed transition before anything is sent to a subscriber. Demand is spiky by nature, so polling cadence has to hold under its own load.
